, colorado. the first presidential debate one day away. this is the romney pre-game show. will mitt romney be held accountable for lies and distortions about president obama's record? we got a sneak preview of what happens when mitt romney is forced to tell the truth. a fox affiliate here in denver asked romney to explain what paul ryan could not, how he plans to pay for $5 trillion tax cut by only eliminating deductions. >> there's an option. you could say everybody is going to get up to a deduction and you could use your home mortgage deduction or others, health care deduction and fill that bucket, if you will, the $17,000 bucket that way and higher income people might have a lower number. >> at least the plan has a name. it's the bucket plan. mitt romney will cap deductions at $17,000 for all americans. is that good for the middle class? do the math. for rich americans, the cap, it just might be lower than that. he was very vague on that point as well. the big problem with romney's bucket plan besides being hilarious is it would only cover $1 to $2 trillion of the $5 trillion tax cut. t

of the substance of that it statement from mr. romney, it did turn the whole republican pundit class against him, called every candidate in a contested race to distance themselves from the presidential nominee of their party to start campaigning against mitt romney, telling voters, listen, i don't like that guy on that issue either, but vote for me any way even though i'm a republican. whether or not you think the remarks were scandalous, the polling impact of them is now showing up directly at a time when mr. romney's egregiously bad polling numbers seem to be calcifying and when most voters are now starting to vote. an incredibly negative impact for romney and his campaign at a difficult time for them. now on the eve of the first presidential debate, if they were hoping to put that behind them, any hope of getting away from the issue has now been expunged because "the huffington post" tonight set off its own bells and whistles, flashing siren bomb shell by posting previously uncirculated video of paul ryan speaking less than a year ago. and what will effect the debate tomorrow is mr. ryan in t

the hoover dam. why not while you're there. mitt romney was in colorado where he grabbed a burrito bowl at a local chipotle. he stopped to pose for pictures with this staff of the restaurant. love the guy on the right. amazing. presidential candidates spending most of their days in debate mode. it was up to the running mates to do the heavy lifting. joe biden was blasting the romney tax plan with being out of touch with the middle class. >> the romney/ryan tax plan will raise taxes on middle-class families with a child, one or more children by an additional $2,000 a year. how -- all kidding aside, without the boos. stop all that malarkey. this is deadly ernest, man. this is deadly ernest. how they can justify -- how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify it? >> the romney campaign picked up on that middle class being buried for the last four years during which president obama was in the white house while campaigning in iowa. paul ryan did not miss the opportunity to seize on biden's choice of words.
